Вообще, рассказывая про германские племена в предыдущей главе, Гиббон не сказал про них ни слова хорошего (кроме личной смелости и преданности вождям) - лентяи, алкоголики, грабители, и вообще дикари, которые не хотят работать принципиально. Но про готов, жителей Скандинавии, тон рассказа меняется, хотя по сути все тоже самое. Судя по всему, английская аристократия из глубинки не любила и презирала ганноверскую династию и привезенных ей с собой хессианских наемников в армии Британии. В подтверждение - популярные в 60-е годы 18 века сельские отряды милиции, в одном из которых, кстати, служил и сам Гиббон.
